Restaurant Review: Champs Diner

Recently, I had the opportunity to eat at an all vegan diner in Brooklyn, New York. Champs Diner is truly one of a kind. From the 50's styled booths, to the amazing food, the experience was great!

Walking into Champs I had very high hopes, as I had heard a lot about the diner before. Everything I had read and heard about Champs was all positive, making me eager to find out firsthand just how good Champs really is. They do not take reservations, and I was going at noon, so I was ready to have to wait for a table. To my surprise, there was actually no wait at all. As we entered the restaurant, we were greeted by a smiling face and shown to a table right away. There was a strong 50's vibe right away, which I appreciate in a diner; the typical old-fashioned diner experience. The booths were very shiny with a black and white pattern, and the floors were also checkered. Although a bit tight, we were off to a great start.

Looking at the menu, I was indecisive about what to get. I wasn't sure if I wanted breakfast food or lunch food — I really wanted to try everything. I ultimately decided upon getting the buffalo chicken sandwich as my main meal because before going vegan this was my favorite type of sandwich. Some other meals I wanted to taste were the cookie dough pancakes and the mac and cheese. I ordered mozzarella sticks for an appetizer and a milkshake to drink.

After ordering — from staff who were very nice — I couldn't help but turn my attention to the very interesting wall decorations. One sign that caught my attention read "Hail Seitan," a play on Hail Satan; a phrase used by the devil's supporters. I found these decorations very amusing.

When the mozzarella sticks came, I was very skeptical as to how they would compare to the real thing. When I went vegan, at first, I wasn't interested in eating vegan replacements such as cheeses and meats. Although I had previously tried a lot of vegan cheeses, I was still skeptical of the mozzarella sticks. To my surprise, they were amazing! The appetizer came with four sticks and some tomato sauce. Each one was just as delicious as the last. When they were gone I was wishing I had another. If you go to Champs Diner, I highly recommend you try the mozzarella sticks.

Next, the buffalo 'chicken' sandwich came. It was also good. I wouldn't order this meal again for two reasons. The first is, I simply want to try other options on the menu. The second reason is that there was A TON of buffalo sauce on it which made it very hot. Depending on the bite, it became too much to eat. My mouth actually felt like it was on fire, making the sandwich unenjoyable. The taste was good because it tasted like a buffalo chicken sandwich. Overall, I wouldn't say I didn't like the sandwich, I just wouldn't get it again.

Lastly, I ordered the blueberry pie milkshake, which was by far the best part of the meal! The milkshake had pie crust and fresh blueberries mixed into it. To top it off, it had a pile of vegan whipped cream. It was so good! They had so many more milkshake flavors that it would take me so many visits just to try them all!

Overall, I really enjoyed my meal at Champs Diner! The food not only looked delicious, but it tasted even better! I would definitely go back again. The food was great, and the service was too! Champs Diner definitely was a champion!
